This is a great KitchenAid accessory. It works as advertised. It costs much less than stand-alone machines and takes up less space. I’ve made several batches since I received it and they were all richer, creamier, and more flavorful than any store-bought ice cream I’ve had. It’s important to follow the instructions. The bowl needs to be thoroughly frozen, and the ice cream batter needs to be well chilled (at least four hours in the refrigerator). Pouring batter into the bowl can be awkward but there’s a fix for that: Use a large measuring cup to pour the mixture into the bowl.

I had two issues with the product, both minor. First, the connector attachment doesn’t fit flush to the mixer, which makes it a bit awkward to setup – not difficult, just awkward. The instructions do not tell you that once you start churning the ice cream, you cannot stop until it is completed period. If you stop he mixer for any reason, do NOT restart it. If you do, the plastic connector will snap as the dasher will have frozen in the bowl. This happened to me when our power went out for about 30 seconds then came back on. I wasn’t close enough to get to the mixer to stop it when the power came back on and I heard a loud snap and the connect plastic had broken. It would have been nice if there was a warning in the instructions about power outages. Overall though, the ice cream maker works well. I made a no-added sugar chocolate ice cream with sugar free chocolate chips mixed in as well as a pink champagne sorbet. Both were quick and easy. Clean-up is simple. The bowl does take up a large amount of my freezer space prior to making the ice cream. My freezer is set a -1 F, so it only takes about 15 minutes to churn the ice cream.

I love the fact that it already fits my KitchenAid mixer. I just put it in the freezer overnight for use the next day. I’ve been experimenting with various recipes both dairy and dairy free. I’ve found that the mixer takes only about 15 – 20 minutes as opposed to the 25 – 30 minutes that most recipes call for. After making a batch of ice cream I simply transfer the ice cream into containers, immerse that bowl, paddle and mixer attachment into soapy water, rinse off, dry and then place the bowl right back into the freezer for the next batch. Easy peasy! I am very pleased after having made four batches of ice cream.

This was the best birthday gift for my 8 year old son – it’s the gift that keeps on giving one bowl of ice cream, gelato, sorbet, & fro-yo at a time. He wasn’t all that hyped about getting a “kitchen toy” for his birthday, but after making him s’mores ice cream two days after his birthday, he was over the moon, and we’ve made several types of ice cream and sorbet in the past couple of weeks since his birthday. Best small kitchen appliance ever! The stand mixer ice cream recipe book we purchased has some fantastic recipes, and the combo of this freezer bowl and recipe book have kept this little boy (and the whole family) happy eating these decadent frozen desserts. I held off on adding a review for this ice cream maker because my previous ice cream maker broke after a single usage. So far, I have made ice cream several times with this bowl without any issues at all. I absolutely love being able to make ice cream where I know every ingredient – and add sugar substitutes like honey instead. I have only made ice cream in the winter (crazy, I know) so I am not sure how well this will work when the house is warmer but here are a few useful tips that I have noted…
– After use, I hand wash the bowl (it can not be machine washed but cleaning it is really easy), let it dry completely, and then just store it in the freezer so I can make ice cream a little quicker. The bowl needs to be in the freezer about a day before hand so it is just easier to leave it in the freezer. (This is all in the instructions – if you read them carefully, it will work out for you).
– Always start the KitchenAid before pouring in the ingredients. The paddle is made of plastic and would likely break if you try to start the mixer after pouring in the mix since the mix starts to freeze to the side of the bowl the second you pour it in.
– Stick the mix in the freezer about 20-30 minutes before making your ice cream – even then, the ice cream will look a bit like whip cream more than thick ice cream. It never gets hard so I transfer it into a sealable container (it can’t be stored in the bowl anyway) and put it in the freezer a while.
– I halved the recipe because the ice cream mix “expands” as it is froze as ice usually does – I would start out with a half recipe for your first usage and then expand it if you feel like the bowl has more room. This is the only reason the bowl gets a 4 instead of a 5 – it doesn’t safely make as much ice cream as indicated.
– There are ice cream recipes in the book but I searched online because I wanted less sweetener (or sweetened with honey or maple syrup instead), more vanilla, and more heavy cream to make my ice cream creamier. In case you are curious, I use 1.5 cups heavy cream, 0.5 cups half and half, 1/4 honey/sugar/other sweetener, 2 tbsp. vanilla (I love a lot of vanilla), a pinch of salt. Maple syrup gives a butter pecan vibe but it requires a little more syrup than other sweeteners and adding chopped pecans adds a nice touch to the ice cream. Sometimes, I will deal with less creamy ice cream and just use 2 cups half and half because less creamy ice cream is better than no ice cream at all.

Yummy! I can now make high end ice cream in any flavor I choose. Better ingredients and the right recipe make for a better experience as compared to the store bought brand. The cool part is how easy the process is from beginning to end. Freeeze the bowl for 16 hours, make the yummy base, then add to the bowl and the churn for 15-20 minutes. The end result is like tasty soft serve that can well be eaten at this point if preferred. For a more traditional ice cream texture and taste, freeze the end result from the churn in a quart sized ice cream container for several hours.
Our version of Häagen-Dazs Matcha Green Tea turned out amazing and is easily preferred to over the original namesake.

I have been considering the Ninja Creami for a long time, but I saw this for my Kitchen Aid and was intrigued. Not only did I not have to have one more appliance hanging around but it was far less expensive than the Creami, so I bought it…then returned it a few days later. We made a basic ice cream from a recipe and it was delicious and easy to make with some planning (you need to freeze the bowl 24 hrs in advance). What I didn’t like was the bowl is huge, so you end up with a large batch and to have to freeze the bowl for 24 hrs takes up a lot of space in the freezer. Also, when you (re) freeze the ice cream after initially making it, it is rock hard so it’s not like the grocery store ice cream.
It did a nice job and was comparatively inexpensive, but for me, the cons outweighed the pros on this one so I returned it and got the Creami.

This product is a great gift option for anyone who likes to be in the kitchen! It’s easy to use and clean. Unlike the traditional ice cream maker, you can make this inside and within 20 minutes. For fast prep, I would recommend leaving the bowl in your freezer. That way it’s ready to use when you are. There are plenty of quick recipes to whip up some ice cream with ingredients you may already have on hand. Highly recommend!
